Loreto, B.C.S., Mexico

Loreto is home to a Mission which was built here in 1697. The town was the first Spanish settlement on the Baja peninsula and it grew up around this beautiful old stone tower.

Loreto has a small protected harbor on the Sea of Cortez and loads of birds are taking refuge from the wind today. Fishing charters and boats to take you out to the local islands can be arranged from here. Fishing is big business here, as is tourism. It’s the first of the “Pueblos Magicos” or “magic towns” as the Mexico Tourism office calls them, that I am able to visit. There are 69 small cities located around Mexico which are supposed to be either historically significant, unusual are very beautiful…and these magic towns are now on my radar.

There are some beautiful sculptures along the port, and there is a lot of construction going on in the town.

I am told there was a lot of damage done here by a hurricane a few years ago and the city is still working to recover.

Local restaurants located around the square and over several blocks in the more historic downtown area will cook the fish you catch if you like. I watch children play and rollerblade one evening in the central square. It’s a lovely town.
