One of the places that’s been on my “list” for a while is a Welsh village in Argentina. There are several Welsh settlements in Argentina and even more than one to choose from on the east coast where we are now. Both Trelew and Gaiman, especially the latter, are known for Welsh influences left from the original settlers of this area who arrived a century and a half ago. We hope to stop for a day or two and enjoy a cream tea, a full tea service complete with sweet cakes and sandwiches.
Trelew is a bit bigger town so we head to the smaller village of Gaiman, about 10 miles in from Ruta 3, which lies in a river valley filled with small farms. I see signs for tea houses before we arrive. Because of their poor luck, and our good luck, our friends from Song of the Road (Sam and Erica) who had already left to go west toward the mountains, have come back to Gaiman to work on a small problem with their vehicle. So we get to enjoy not one, but TWO, tea services with them. First we go to Ty Gwyn and settle in for a cozy tea experience. Because they have been here before, Erica and Sam suggest we share a service between the two of us instead of having lots of left over sweets.
We have teapots full of tea and sit and chat for a couple of hours….we have small cakes, the famous black cake (a fruit cake), tarts and sandwiches.
After a day to allow our bodies to process all the caffeine and sugar we go back for a second tea, and this time we go to Plas Y Coed, the oldest tea house in the area, where Princess Diana visited in 1995.
Plas y Coed is known for having the most authentic Welsh recipes for its cakes, according to my guide book.
It’s a lovely afternoon and I’m so glad we got to share the experience with Sam and Erica.
We really enjoy our relaxing days in the municipal campground, and getting to watch Erica and Sam feed some sweet stray cats. Brian gives the bikes a good wash to rid the bikes of the salt and sand from Peninsula Valdes. We have a nice fire one night, and then Erica makes some yummy kebabs for dinner.
Thank you , Sam and Erica, for more of your good company. We had so much fun with you.
