My next big adventure

After 25 years of working in the hospitality industry for a handful of companies, I’ve finally decided to make the leap from hotel manager to hotel owner. Well, motel owner to be exact.

I’ve been dreaming and talking about having a place of my own for more than a decade. And now I finally do. It’s a small place, an antique (having been built in 1937), and it needs tons of work. I mean TONS of work. I’m excited to get started shaping and growing its sixteen rooms into a charming historic home-away-from-home for visitors to the Black Hills.

The Chalet Motel, is located in Custer, South Dakota, and will open May 1 for a six-month season. It’s just minutes from Crazy Horse Memorial, Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park and many other stunning places.

Please stop by and say hello if you’re ever in my part of the world. And if you’re handy with a hammer or paint brush, and have some spare time, I would love some help. The pay isn’t great (read as non-existent), but the lunch breaks and water cooler conversations certainly are.

Wish me luck!
